UK - SUSTAINABLE SALES AT RUSSELL ROOF TILES

With the Government planning to cut carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2050, leading roof tile manufacturer Russell Roof Tiles has seen sales of its sustainable thinner leading-edge (TLE) roof tiles increase this year. Russells, which was the first manufacturer to launch the thinner leading-edge interlocking tile on the market, has seen more than six million TLE tiles sold across the UK in 2017 alone. In particular, Russells saw the TLE sales rise by 38 per cent in Scotland and 35 per cent in the south of the UK - just two years after a new southern sales division was launched. The TLE tiles form part of Russell Roof Tiles’ newest range – the Natural Range, which also recently launched the Bute tile and the Harvest Stone coloured tiles and has contributed to Russell’s considerable growth over the past year. Sales of Bute tiles alone have grown by 1,405 per cent this year. With five products in the Natural Range including Galloway, Lothian, Moray, Polden and Bute, the tiles within the range are designed to give the natural appearance of a clay, plain or slate tile, helping to replicate the look of different roofs and local council requirements in different areas of the country. Designed to look like small format slates, the tiles have been created to be quicker to fit but have the same great look of small tiles at a cost-effective price.

Meeting the A+ rating in the BRE Green Guide to Specification, the concrete TLE tile also provides an energy-efficient and sustainable roofing solution for builders and developers who need to incorporate insulation and energy-saving roofs on hundreds of houses and new builds to meet the new low carbon emission standards set out by the Government’s new plans. One development that was required to meet these sustainable standards a social housing development in Hartcliffe, Bristol. By incorporating Russell’s Galloway tiles, the 32 homes were able to meet the equivalent of Level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes – a code to measure the level of sustainability in new homes, taking into consideration energy emissions, materials, pollution, waste and ecology. Each property also met the Lifetime Homes and Secured by Design standards which avoids the cost of need to change or adapt the home in the future. This was because each one of Russell’s tiles are made from the hard-wearing material concrete. The tiles provide excellent thermic insulation from heat, between the roof tile and ceiling, especially during summer months and protect the underlying membrane from deterioration. In cold climates, concrete roof tiles work against snow, ice accumulation and help retain heat as opposed to clay roof tiles which can crack and damage easily in cold weather.
However, sustainable building products need to offer durability and longevity, not just low embodied energy. TLE tiles have a lifespan in excess of 60 years and because of its concrete material, the product is cured at a much lower temperature and for only a short amount of time. As a result, the tiles have an energy saving of up to 30 per cent and are also made using 15 per cent less raw materials than a standard flat interlocking tile. Due to the thinner profile of the TLE tile, the product also requires 20 per cent less packaging. Andrew Hayward, Managing Director at Russell Roof Tiles said: “At a time when the Government is pushing the construction industry for more energy efficient homes, our TLE tiles provide a cost-effective green solution. “I am pleased to see such a brilliant increase in sales this year as more developers and contractors learn about the green credential benefits of our tiles and I look forward to see this growth continue as the industry works towards cutting carbon emissions by 80%.” Russell Roof Tiles is committed to ensuring its environmental responsibilities very seriously from the manufacturing to the transportation of materials and is accredited with an excellent rating of BES 6001: Issue 3 – the most recent version of the BRE Framework for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products. Russell Roof Tiles is a pioneering independent roof tile manufacturer, providing roofing solutions for leading UK house builders and high profile social housing projects. The company specialises in manufacturing concrete roof tiles and plastic accessories.
